feet.

--cape canaveral, florida--
the space shuttle retires this year.
nerd-venture 2010: a trip to cape canaveral for the last night shuttle launch.

sprinkles in beach towns
we can put people in space
but can't get a sonic in seattle
probably still thinking about sonic

blastoff was scheduled
for 4:39 am sunday morning.
(weather permitting,
is the key here)
saturday night we go to Kennedy Space Center,
and wander and wait for a few hours
until the buses take us to the causeway.
there is something magikal
and a little sad
to think it's the last time
people will be camping out all over the complex
in the middle of the night
to wait for a launch.

a portrait of nerds in anticipation
attempted galactic stowaway
stepping into destiny
yellow goat productions gets its dream collaboration
press release
the mercury eight.
(i have had a crush on Deke Slayton--
bottom row, second from left--
since i was eleven.
i will have three sons,
and name them all Deke.)
hurricane tunnel.
(my best windspeed):
the shuttle (mockup) payload bay
is a lot like a looney bin:
padded walls
and chock full of geniuses:

watching a night shuttle launch
from the causeway
is like this:
(but colder
and with more anticipation
than it looks)
all night
the cloud cover
played games with my heart.
at about T minus eleven minutes
the launch was postponed
until the next morning.
ughhhhh.
we bused back to the space center. turned in our tickets for the next morning. and i called united to change my plane ticket.
(SPACESHIPS
are worth
an extra sick day.)
we slept for a good part of sunday,
went out on beach town for more sprinkles and ice cream,
and did the whole night at the space center thing
again.

but this time,
here's what happened:

this is not my best filming job,
but obviously i was paying more attention
to other things...
i wish you could hear the countdown,
but all you could hear on this clip,
was my screaming--
'that ROCKET is going to SPACE!'
godspeed endeavour.

note that these shots (particularly the good ones) were not taken by me. courtesy of j and s, of the nerd-tang clan.

That's so cool!!! You guys are too fun! Maybe the reason that you don't have a Sonic is because there's too many yuppies up in Seattle??? I have one right by my house and they know what I get all the time. That's pretty sad, huh?

And I could just hear you screaming in the wind tunnel!! Just Terrific-just terrific. How do you come up with all these!!
