after christmas we took a mini roadtrip further up into the mountains to taos for a few days. here's what i found out about taos pueblo!

the taos pueblo is OLD--they claim to be the longest inhabited community in the U.S.--UNESCO has named the pueblo as a 'living' heritage site. (i think sky city also claims to be the longest inhabited pueblo...but we'll let them sort that out between themselves.) the newest building is a rebuilt church that's over a hundred and fifty years old. there's still no electricity or running water allowed within the pueblo walls (propane in the church is the only modern-ish feature anywhere), and non-tribal members are only allowed in during certain times. tribal land and water rights in the area have a long and interesting history... (pueblos have inhabited this specific pueblo since before any european exploration of n. america (?!?!)--but tribal water rights were given to the pueblo by the US government just barely during the current administration).

there's a great view of Wheeler peak from the plaza. a small creek runs through the center of the pueblo. this picture is of one of the larger complexes. the shadows on the left side are from a group of wooden drying racks (they used to dry meat and vegetables on them, but now they serve as more of just a shade patio). all the standard doorways are additions from spanish influence. the original entrances to the buildings were through holes in the ceiling, for protection. protection from roaming outside tribes...like those shifty comanches below?

some of the lower buildings are open as jewelry/art shops run by tribal members. here are the fantastic earrings i got...

last year we were raccoons.

byu museum of art has an interesting exhibit right now.

saw book tower.
heart sank a bit.
(i think my favorite short story 'the Celestial Omnibus' by EM Forster explains why better than i can. read it. it's good. )

but turns out this dude's temporary book sculptures leave the books intact (not sure how, as there's gotta be tons of books there) and the books are later donated to third world literacy programs (aren't we art lovers so philanthropic too. pat pat.). but really. i did like it more then.

next--is this the Bible highlighting of a theologian, or a lunatic?

so guy comes across this slightly 'touched' homeless woman, who believes that God sends her messages regularly, which she records via an intricate color code highlighted in her Bibles. she highlights entire Bibles at a time, and he photographed a series of them. but would he have wanted to photograph them if he knew it was a scholar doing the highlighting? i think it's just cool because of the code. secret codes are always interesting. i will remember that if i ever try to become an artist.

Was the poster intended to be a shout out to our very own Massasoit campus indian statue? Duh, of course not.
But i find the native imagery ironic and funny, given the mascot of our northern rivals from U of U...

yesterday i got to go on a flight test (this is not typical) for the new 747-8 Intercontinental. job = winning.

like, i GET fluid dynamics. but it's still such a crazy thought that massive machines, full of hundreds of people, controlled by one little bitty person using some buttons and computers, can lift into the air and predictably go an intended route hundreds or thousands of miles away on this this planet of ours...

pass the landing strip twice to scare the cows off first. lunch in montana. (it was probably the same cows from the runway.)

why yes, i'd like to tour the flight deck, thank you. oh, sit in the co-pilot seat of a cruising 747? yes PLEASE. so dope. our eastern block sounding pilot loves his job, and turning knobs, so he gave a good show. might be the closest i'll ever get to the summit of Rainier.

on a breakfast date some time ago, I tried butternut squash jam at Sitka and Spruce for the first time. yowzahs that stuff was good!

soooo, i finally i made butternut squash jam today. don't worry, i won't make you try it.

mine is definitely not the jelly+chunk stuff from Sitka--it's way more jammy. but it has a really good autumny taste... might be good with cinnamon next time.

this was from a simple no-pectin recipe found here. next i'd like to try strawberry-pineapple-kiwi, but i'm assuming i would have to do more of a jelly and use juice for the pineapple since the texture of the fruit gets a bit fiberish? any jam pros out there with a hotline?!

um, i went to korea! (just for a weekend. after a really tiring biztravel to japon.)

s korea is cool i think. and by south korea i mean the really really limited part of seoul + dmz that i saw.

reason 1. i like when people are real with you. like, if they don't want you to eat in their restaurant, because they know it will be a pain to try and understand you trying to order anything besides kimchi, so they're just like, sorry, closed, with their forearms in an X in front of them. even though there are obviously happy koreans eating inside. but it's like thank you for being honest. in japan everyone kind of just acts really sterile and nice to keep from causing any sort of non-conformance. in korea there's no over abundance of that orderly stuff. old ladies just shove you around if you're in the way. and a lot of things they seem to do just kindof by the seat of their pants, and i like that because it's familiar, haha.

reason 2 also, all the ATMs, even in the seediest places, have a big ole' FOREIGN button written in english, so you don't have to just guess a bunch of kanji to get to a screen you can understand and then wonder if you just withdrew seventeen million yen from your work credit card. yow-zahs.

reason 3. also, asian children yelling cute things to you in english appeals to every american tourist, cause so many places you just feel hated or looked down on or just dumb, but then the kids are like HELLO! BE MY FRIEND! duh, who doesn't love that. until they start demanding things.

reason 4. i went kareoke with some people, some of whom were native koreans. these guys basically served a big plate of spicy-beef-flavored-kareoke-superiority to everyone else there. i like that they take their singing seriously. it reminds me of myself when i'm hanging out with julie and ken.

well, the asian theme for this post's pictures is:

awkward me #1 and soldiers at the empty train station where they've built tracks that go right up to north korea, but no trains run into there. cah-reepy.

awkward me #2 (i almost started laughing because i was trying to make my feet look like the guys, but then i didn't know what to do with my hands, as in all these weird soldier pictures) and American soldier at the United Nations checkpoint before the demilitarized zone. this is where you have the briefing where you sign the waiver saying that if something 'unforeseen' happens while you're in the demilitarized zone, no one's accountable for it. they also explain no pictures of the south korean side, when you're on the border you walk single file, no pictures unless its during the two minutes you have to take pictures, and don't wave or point or throw notes with your phone number at the north korean guards.

awkward me and awkward hands #3, here with the tae kwon do-stanced south korean soldier. they all stand like that along the border, which seems like it would sap all your energy, but maybe the north koreans don't have tae kwon do so they're intimidated by the pose? (i wouldn't blame them, it always looks like they're about to deck someone in the face.) the cool part of this picture is that it's taken inside of the UN building that is right on top of the line of demarcation. in fact, this is the only place you can walk right across the border. as in, the soldier is standing on south korean side, and i am standing (technically speaking) in north korea.

i do galley design for a living, so food pictures should be fitting.

fatty tuna sashimi. i don't think i ever had tried this before. it was delicious, in the raw, mooshy fish way.

this is a cupcake someone got me in seoul. it was like chocolate blueberry, with some delicious filling that wasn't quite a jelly but it wasn't quite a custard. more like custar-elly.

some boiling stuff, and some meat stuff, and some veggie stuff, with kimchi on top.

who knows what these are called. they were like rice flour dumplings in hot sauce.

and they come in a piece of saran wrap. and they're even better than hot wings.

Ozette indian village memorial on the Makah reservation (as in, there was once an indian whaling village. it was buried in a mud slide hundreds of years ago. in the seventies it was found and pillaged. they covered it back up. now you can go to this hut that houses a memorial.)

La Push reservation beaches (some of you might know this as the place where the indians live that are really werewolves and keep the vampires away. but it's really just a nice beach owned by nice indians).

last Sunday was one of those trick-sun days...sunny in the morning, but by the time you plan to do something outside it's begun raining. Grrrr.

well we went anyways.

the www says that the trail down to the base of snoqualmie falls was closed, so we went to twin falls instead.

i'd never been there before--it's up just a couple miles of trail off I-90, exit 34. easy hike--lots of families out, and really nice for a sunday afternoon.

i really like how it fans out at the bottom from smashing across the rock.

it was sunny again in time for the return part of the hike.

Inspired by a recent trip to the Ape Caves at Mt St Helen’s, our team name was APES IN CAPES (read the cape). Capes courtesy of K and C. We had the best costumes. Except for MAYBE the rocker family.

It’s a scavenger hunt around the city-—at each clue, you have to get a picture with everyone in your team in it (so no splitting up)

We are smiling because we came in SECOND place out of like 130 teams…Some of the challenges were getting a pic with a cop, mariners fan in a jersey, pyramid in front of the original starbucks with another team, pic with something older than 130 yrs old, jumping pic with a stranger and the whole space needle showing, ETC.

I guess you could say that I've been training for this since I started watching Amazing Race like 7 years ago. We pretended like we didn't care about winning, sortof, but we really did, so coming in second was pretty sweet. And that was ok because the kiddos that won were twin marathon runners. Are you kidding me?

This is probably a lot like winning the amazing race. But we won a hundred dollars instead of a million. And we only got to go to pioneer square instead of Mongolia.

Trying to be conscious of the time I had in town for my layover, I asked a man working at a street vendor if he had the time.

He gave me a look that I didn’t understand

I'm on another biztravel to l'allemagne.
Where I do a lot of this:

Measuring, that is.
During the final meetings for our programs, we conduct inspections where we measure our units to validate airplane interfaces and check them for certification requirements and airline configuration definition blah blah blah.
I know, sounds hong shu.
I can't show you pictures of what I'm actually measuring cause it's mega top secret.

And by sortof I mean not at all.

Now first, you should understand that I don't have super awesome boarding skills. And I am not just saying that to be humble. Really.
Two weeks ago. Boarding. Near the end of the day I felt like I was doing pretty decently. +2 pts. Last run of the day. THEN...

When I was switching (read: attempting to switch) from my heel edge to my toe, I unintentionally dropped in at the steepest part of the un-groomed run I was on. -2 pts.

I hit my face first, then caught my edge and tumbled backwards, hit my head, and continued, end over end, all the way to the bottom of the face (-3 pts for each rotation. not sure how many that was). It felt like I was falling for eons because I remember having so many weirdly distinct thoughts, but it was probably only 6 seconds or so.

Thoughts that transpired as I fell:

-uuuuuggggh

-i just broke my nose

-don't let me die

-this run was a stupid idea (-2 pts)

-please oh please don't let me die

-not wearing a helmet was a stupid idea (-6 pts)

-is this what it feels like to get beat up

-don't wanna die

-going on this run by myself was a stupid idea (-4 pts)

Anyways. When i stopped tumbling i was overjoyed to find that i was not dead (+lots of pts) and I had (fairly) decent mobility (+2 pts)...my body just felt as if it had been slammed against a brick wall a few times.

My left ankle, left knee, and nose seemed to take the worst of it, but nothing broke. Yeeeaaaah. Now, my face doesn't hurt anymore and my ankle's just feeling a little weak. We went back up to the same resort yesterday, so I went back to the area where I fell to see if I had just imagined how steep it was...I rolled past where the guy at the bottom is...about to where you can start to see the tracks where it flattens out...

A humbling experience,

to say the least.
